Question: When you were in high school, what was your favorite thing to do? Answer: “In high school, me and three of my friends built a boat. A flat-bottomed boat and we took it out on a The Big River, which is a tributary of the Meramec River and went out there for four years in the summer. It started out the first year, it was marine plywood and wooden sides and it was eight feet long. The next year, we lengthened it to sixteen feet long. We had a […]

We Are Friendship Village: Mary Jo Sortland, resident Friendship Village Chesterfield

Question: What has been a primary interest of yours? Answer: “Any kind of music. I like to listen to it and perform it. On Monday mornings at the coffee hour I’ll sing about three songs solo every couple of weeks. I love to sing and have the stereo on a lot. So long as I’m able, I’ll sing. I almost majored in music and sometimes I wish I would’ve. It started when I was just a baby. My mother and my father sang all the time. They sang duets a […]

We Are Friendship Village: Jeannine Goetz, resident Friendship Village Sunset Hills

Question: What is one of your favorite things to do? Answer: Well, we play pool here (at Friendship Village) three days a week. Some people think “swimming pool” when you say “pool,” but we play billiards. When we were young, we all played pool in our rathskellers (basements), but now it’s kind of more serious. We have a tournament coming up. It’s going to be interesting and fun. We’ve been playing at Friendship Village for about two years. It depends on the day or the moment how much I’m improving. […]

Question: Why did you get involved with education? Answer: “Like my wife, I read a lot, and I read a lot of history and nonfiction. When I realized the magnitude of the second world war at a young age, I knew I’d eventually be drafted so I wanted to be a little bit more informed as to where we could be going and what was going on. I went to a little one-room country school which was very tiny. I remember one of the first things I learned was when […]

When Jimmy (Diane’s late husband) and I went to China on our 50th wedding anniversary, that was really special. We went on a river cruise. Another good one was when we went to Russia. We went from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We also traveled all over Canada in an RV. We also went to New Zealand for a trip and Australia for another. When Jim was working, he was always busy, so when he retired, […]

Question: Where did you sing and what has that meant to you? Answer: “I started singing when I was 12, although I didn’t perform solos until I was in college. I sang with several audition-only groups including the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, the St. Louis Chamber Chorus, and spent 17 years in the American Kantorei, which is a Lutheran group of 32 singers.
