Question: Where did you sing and what has that meant to you? Answer: “I started singing when I was 12, although I didn’t perform solos until I was in college. I sang with several audition-only groups including the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, the St. Louis Chamber Chorus, and spent 17 years in the American Kantorei, which is a Lutheran group of 32 singers. I was also the alto soloist in several churches including Christ Church Cathedral downtown for 5 years. I had stopped singing solos when I was 60, but […]

WWII War Veteran Tony Snyder of Friendship Village Sunset Hills Given France’s Highest Honor!

We were thrilled to be present as our own Friendship Village Sunset Hills’ resident Tony Snyder, 95, was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal Tuesday by Guillaume Lacroix, the French Consul General! The honor carries with it the distinction of Knighthood and is given on behalf of the President of France. Tony was being recognized for his service during World War II as a U.S. Army Sergeant in the 14th Armored Division (“The Liberators”) who helped liberate France to win WWII. The French Legion of Honor medal is the […]

Question: What is your favorite junk food? Answer: “I really like ice cream. Ice cream and cake. I love that. I’ve got a sweet tooth. But I had just one cookie today. I’m trying to be good. I love Chocolate Hotel, which is a very dark chocolate ice cream. I like that with a nice piece of chocolate cake. But vanilla ice cream with chocolate cake is good, too. But I’m trying to cut out all junk food now. So, right now my junk food is popcorn because it’s healthy, […]

Question: In what ways have you grown and changed since moving from your house? Answer: “Before I came here, I had other interests such as gardening and keeping bird feeders. But when I moved out here my interests grew and changed. It’s like opening a whole new world. I’m a part of planning the Monday Morning Coffee Hour and we have weekly meetings, and on Tuesday’s I go to the Village Care Center to call bingo. When I first moved here, I volunteered a lot because before me, my parents […]

Question: What character trait do you think is most important to have? Answer: “Integrity. It covers a wide range of things. It covers honesty. It covers everything. It’s like an umbrella. You’re more cautious of a person who doesn’t have integrity. It changes how you interact with them. I was a police man in my career and you run into all kinds of people, good and bad. A lot of bad people. And you just learn to judge people. I was a police man in St. Louis city for thirty […]

Question: What is something important to you that you think could also help others? Answer: “With my teaching profession, I’ve always enjoyed learning and I’ve always been an artsy person. Learning opens doors and I think that applies to a lot of different things. Whatever it is that interests you, if you never opened yourself up to learn in the first place and expose yourself to new experiences, you may not be where you ended up. There are so many opportunities for us to learn and enjoy and that’s why […]

Question: Did you like school? Answer: “Yes, I liked school, but when I went to elementary school for eight years, it was a small country school and one year I was the only girl in my school. We had seven boys and me. This was in a small farm town close to Columbia, Illinois. We had eight grades and one teacher in one room. I went through my whole grade school without having anyone in my class. I don’t think it affected me very much, but I might not have […]

Question: What’s something you did when you were younger that’s stuck with you through the years? Answer: “Writing. It’s a way to communicate with other generations and I think it’s important to share and teach what I know, as well as what I don’t. Now it’s become more connected to family history. I’ve been scrapbooking to make the family history come alive too, so it won’t be boring. I have 11 grandchildren and fortunately most of them are very interested and always nag me, “Grandma, you haven’t written anything about […]

Question: If you could do one thing this week, what would it be? Answer: “One thing this week? I’d like to go to Florida. I’d go fishing, sit around and have my Manhattan in the evening by the pool. We used to own a home in Florida and we went every winter. But my wife decided we should sell that property and we have a very democratic marriage. We vote on everything and she gets two votes and I forgot to vote ‘me, myself and I’ because I could have […]
