“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” - Psalm 23:5a
An active battlefield seems like an unlikely place to stop and have lunch. Yet, the Psalmist envisions the Lord rising up in those moments when we feel overwhelmed and outnumbered and inviting us to a great meal. Why would He do that? Of course, the answer is found in considering why anyone ever throws a dinner party – it’s an expression of love. It’s an invitation to draw near to the Host and embrace deep and loving relationship. Isn’t that what we need on our darkest days – the knowledge that we are not alone and that we are greatly loved? When we know we are in the presence of the Lord, we also know that we are safe and that no enemy can triumph against us (because they’d first have to come through Him!). Let’s come to His table today. We’ve all been invited…and there’s no better place to be.
