Bartimaeus’ problem was not the beggar’s coat given to him by the government so he could legally collect alms. The problem was that the coat became his identity. When people saw the beggar’s coat, they often failed to see Bartimaeus. Few saw past his blindness, poverty, and neediness. That changed when he heard Jesus’ voice calling him to come close. Bartimaeus responded by throwing off his beggar’s coat. He ran to Jesus who treated him with respect, brought healing, and restored his dignity. This same Jesus is here for you.
