Question: What’s something you’ve done that people might not know about?
Answer: I was a synchronized swimmer for over thirty years. I started when I was about 35 and some friends in the neighborhood knew I liked to swim and said there were a bunch of women at the Y in Brentwood and they did synchronized swimming. Well, I didn’t know a thing about that, but they said I’d be fine. So, when my youngest started grade school (I have four children), I joined up. There were over thirty women and they did exercises and routines and mostly we swam to music. And some of the girls would work out a routine to a piece of music like a waltz or something and then we would swim or use partners and do moves like putting our foot up in the air like the do on the Olympics. I was a good, strong swimmer, but not a very good synchronized swimmer, but I just adored it. I loved moving to music. It was just like dancing and it’s marvelous exercise.
There’s about four of us left from the group, but we’ve stayed together all these years and every once in a while we get together for lunch, but not for swimming. – Rita Bernard, Friendship Village Sunset Hills Resident
After gathering about 170 interviews and photos, we will publish A BOOK featuring all the great residents who participated at Friendship Village Chesterfield and Friendship Village Sunset Hills. AND PARTICIPANTS get A FREE COPY OF THE BOOK! During the period of working on the project, we will also be sharing these photos and stories on Facebook and other social media such as Instagram, so look for them and please follow the hashtag #WeAreFriendshipVillage to stay current with the project!
We think it’s a great chance to share a bit about who we are! Residents’ participation takes about fifteen minutes, so it won’t take much time to be a part of it and we think everyone will enjoy getting to know their neighbors and friends a little bit better!
We look forward to seeing you as we get to share insights about the senior living residents who are making our Friendship Village retirement communities so great!
Thanks again!
