Question: Tell me about the different ways in which art has impacted you?
Answer: “I won a scholarship to Webster College to major in music and I’ve studied piano from the time I was eight. I taught piano after I graduated from college and that was fun. I really enjoyed bringing this talent out of them and they weren’t all marvelous but there were enough of them that really felt it and you knew they were going to love it. I played a lot of piano here at the Village and at the St. Luke’s hospital atrium until I retired. I couldn’t play by ear and I needed to read the notes, so I’ve always played a lot of classical music. That music is so beautiful, it just lends itself to self-expression. For example, I’ve been practicing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and it’s just notes on a page, but when you get slower, faster, louder or softer, it’s like you’re putting yourself into the music. My favorite thing to do now is watercolor paint and I really love it. It’s a way of expressing yourself and I love how you can express yourself with different colors. I have problems with my left arm and sometimes it keeps me up at night so if I can’t sleep, I’ll go and paint. I also took a class 40 years ago and learned how to paper tole, so I teach a class on paper tole here at the Village now and I still do that often. I love to give different ones I make to people.” – Dorie Reed, resident Friendship Village Chesterfield

The text and photo above are part of a year-long project called We Are Friendship Village. We are gathering these photos and brief interviews for Friendship Village’s website’s blog section each day as we chat with residents at Friendship Village Chesterfield and Friendship Village Sunset Hills. We want to give a snapshot introduction to the residents who make up our wonderful senior living communities and give some bit of insight into something you might not know about them. It’s always easier to make new friends when you know a little about them!
At year’s end, we will publish A BOOK featuring the wonderful residents who participated. And people who participate in the project get a FREE COPY OF THE BOOK! During this year, we will also be sharing these photos and text on Facebook and other social media such as Instagram, so keep an eye out for them! And you can follow the hashtag #WeAreFriendshipVillage to stay up to date!
We’re excited for this great chance to share a bit about who we are! Residents’ participation takes just a few minutes, so it won’t take much time to be a part of it!!
Want to participate (or know someone else who might want to?), Please give us a call at (314) 270-7837 or send an email to nagysteve@fvstl.com or drop by the marketing suites in Sunset Hills or Chesterfield. We have 365 of these to do over the course of the year, so everyone is welcome!
We’re looking forward to talking with folks as we get to share more about the senior living residents who are making our Friendship Village retirement communities so wonderful!
Thanks!
