Question: How did your gardening hobby become so large?
Answer: “I was big into gardening. When I was younger, about eight or nine years old, I had an aunt who got me involved in gardening with rosebushes and things like that. When I got married, we took some classes on how to garden your landscape and one thing led to another. I started with one 2×4 planting tray, which eventually let to racks of them, and then a lean-to greenhouse. I outgrew that and so I built a temporary structure too that I would put up with some friends every year. When we moved, we had a three-car garage which ended up being over double the space. I bought bulbs wholesale and then I’d market them out to different grocery stores and florists, so it became a paying hobby over the years. When I moved to Friendship Village, I got involved with the Grounds Committee and we have a good cadre of helpers that can do a variety of tasks. A lot of people here have experience and can participate but are unable to do what they did years ago, so we have a lot of good help with watering and doing some of the heavier things.” – Dexter Kuhlman, resident Friendship Village Chesterfield” – Dexter Kuhlman, resident Friendship Village Chesterfield

The above photo and text are part of our new year-long project we’re calling We Are Friendship Village. We are posting these photos and brief interviews to our website’s blog section every day as we talk with residents at Friendship Village Chesterfield and Friendship Village Sunset Hills. The idea is to give a snapshot introduction to the residents who make up our wonderful senior living communities and give you a peek at something you might not know about them!
At year’s end, we will publish A BOOK featuring all the great residents who participated. During this year, we will also be sharing these photos and text on Facebook and other social media such as Instagram, so look for them and please follow the hashtag #WeAreFriendshipVillage to stay up to date!
We think it’s a great chance to share a bit about who we are! Residents’ participation takes less than ten minutes, so it won’t take much time to be a part of it and we think everyone will enjoy getting to know their neighbors and friends a bit better!
If you are interested in participating (or know someone else who might be), feel free to give us a call at (314) 270-7837 or email at nagysteve@fvstl.com or drop by the marketing suites in Sunset Hills or Chesterfield. We have 365 of these to do over the course of the year, so everyone is welcome!
We look forward to meeting with you as we get to share about the senior living residents who are making our Friendship Village retirement communities so wonderful!
Thanks again!
