As we age, our needs change, and so do the priorities we have for our living spaces. Many seniors want the ability to continue living at home comfortably, independently, and safely. Making modifications throughout your home can make that possible! This can range from simple changes to more extensive renovations, all designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and overall quality of life.
Here’s some of our Friendship Village expert caregivers’ best advice for creating a space that adapts to your changing needs and supports your well-being (while still feeling like home!)
Increase accessibility:
- Lever-style door handles: Lever-style door handles are easier to grip than traditional door knobs.
- Grab bars and handrails: These provide support and stability in bathrooms and hallways.
- Ramps and stairlifts: Making stairs more accessible will keep all the different levels of your home easily accessible.
- Wider doorways: Widening doorways will make it easier to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers, if needed.
Enhance safety:
- Improved lighting: Better lighting (including nightlights) reduces the risk of falls by illuminating walkways and hallways.
- Non-slip flooring: Installing non-slip flooring will prevent slips in bathrooms and kitchens. Also add a non-slip surface to showers and bathtubs. Consider removing loose rugs that may pose a tripping hazard.
- Walk-in showers or tubs: Easily accessible showers eliminate the need to step over high edges.
Improve functionality:
-
- Organize by Priority: Reorganize kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom storage so that items used often are within reach and don’t require moving other items to access.
- Adjustable shelves and drawers: Customize storage to your specific needs and what is most comfortable.
- Lowered countertops and cabinets: When renovating to age in place, consider lower countertops to make it easier to navigate and utilize surfaces without straining.
