An old adage says, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” In other words, we can’t really know the true story until we get past the surface and delve into the details. With people, a first glance can often give us the wrong impression. We don’t discover the truth until we truly get to know them. Similarly, when our view of God is only shaped by the hardships and difficulties we’ve experienced, we also get a false impression. The days of Zephaniah the prophet were full of heartache and disaster. How could a good God allow such things to happen? Yet, if we press a little deeper, we find that in the midst of those troubled times the Lord was working to reveal Himself as a Savior who was with the people through thick and thin. Let’s hold fast to Him! He remains with us even now.
