Jesus insulted them, but He wasn’t trying to be rude. It was just that His idea of what makes us holy was different than their ideas. Whereas the religious leaders focused on outward appearances and “dos and don’ts,” Jesus went straight to the real issue: the heart. Thankfully, the Lord does not leave us helpless, nor does He expect us to perform endless rituals to create a clean heart on our own. He stands ready to transform us from the inside out Himself as we put our trust in Him. No matter what, He can make us new!
