Question: Is there a favorite thing you liked to do as a child?
Answer: “I’ve played the piano since I was seven or eight. I’ve played at every church I’ve attended. Once they find out I play, they ask me to play at the church. I’ve just loved to play, so my mother never had to tell me to go practice because I love it.”
“My mother played, too, and she bought her piano in 1913. When I got to be nineteen or twenty, I wanted to get my own piano when I left home. My brother said I should buy a car, but I said ‘No. A car will only last a couple of years. A piano will last a lifetime.’ And I still have it here in my apartment. It cost me $900 and I saved up to be able to pay for it. We bought it in Chicago. It was a cold November day. I remember everything about that day.”
“It’s gone back and forth from Chicago to St. Louis twice, so it’s travelled a lot. I’ve always wanted to have it with me and I will give it to my great granddaughter when I pass away. Maybe she’ll play or maybe she won’t, but her mom plays and it will be nice for their home.” – Friendship Village Sunset Hills resident Louise Ekstrom
After gathering about 170 interviews and photos, we will publish A BOOK featuring all the great residents who participated at Friendship Village Chesterfield and Friendship Village Sunset Hills. AND PARTICIPANTS get A FREE COPY OF THE BOOK! During the period of working on the project, we will also be sharing these photos and stories on Facebook and other social media such as Instagram, so look for them and please follow the hashtag #WeAreFriendshipVillage to stay current with the project!
We think it’s a great chance to share a bit about who we are! Residents’ participation takes about fifteen minutes, so it won’t take much time to be a part of it and we think everyone will enjoy getting to know their neighbors and friends a little bit better!
We look forward to seeing you as we get to share insights about the senior living residents who are making our Friendship Village retirement communities so great!
Thanks again!
