Question: You’ve done a lot of work as a volunteer. How has volunteering over the years enriched your life?
Answer: I’m a people lover, and that brought me into becoming a guru volunteer. I love everything about volunteering, especially at church. It has taken me into all kinds of wonderful aspects of meeting and enjoying different people. I’ve even gone so far as to volunteer our home to give fundraisers for different organizations in the past. But probably the biggest volunteer job I ever did was at the Good Shepherd School for Children. I saw a sign one day that said they were looking for volunteers, so I went there and ended up staying for ten years. It’s a school for children who have physical or learning disabilities from three to nine years old and getting to see the happiness from the parents and children is amazing. I remember one time we were working with a child and his mom said it was the first time she had ever heard him sing ‘Happy Birthday’. He was four years old at that point and had never spoken. Seeing the joy from others in the tiniest things they could do was very precious to me. I keep in touch with some of the teachers I worked with and we have our get-togethers and talk about how the kids have gone on to have a better life; it’s kind of neat. I’m not sure I could answer the ‘why’ though. I guess I really love Jesus and I just want to do what makes Him happy. – Sue Jacobsmeyer, resident Friendship Village Chesterfield
After gathering about 200 interviews and photos, we will publish A BOOK featuring all the great residents who participated at Friendship Village Chesterfield and Friendship Village Sunset Hills. AND PARTICIPANTS get A FREE COPY OF THE BOOK! During the period of working on the project, we will also be sharing these photos and stories on Facebook and other social media such as Instagram, so look for them and please follow the hashtag #WeAreFriendshipVillage to stay current with the project!
We think it’s a great chance to share a bit about who we are! Residents’ participation takes about fifteen minutes, so it won’t take much time to be a part of it and we think everyone will enjoy getting to know their neighbors and friends a little bit better!
If interested in participating (or know someone else who might be), feel free to give us a call at (314) 270-7837 or email at nagysteve@fvstl.com or drop by the marketing suites in Sunset Hills or Chesterfield. We have a few hundred of these to do, so everyone is welcome!
We look forward to seeing you as we get to share insights about the senior living residents who are making our Friendship Village retirement communities so great!
Thanks again!
