Question: How did you come to be so involved with playing bocce at Friendship Village?
Answer: “So I get this knock on the door when I moved in and this woman said, ‘You left something on the truck,’ and I didn’t know what it could be. She brought up this little black bag and when I looked inside, I saw it was my late husband’s old bocce ball set. I had never played and didn’t know the rules, but I used to watch my husband play, so in 2013 I thought, ‘Well I’ll just start. I know what it should look like.’ When we first started only six players came, but it started to take off pretty quickly. I explained to everyone that Bocce comes from Baci which means kiss, and that the object of the game was to roll your Bocce as close to the white ball as possible. We started out with one lane, but as more people started to come, we increased. We had one man come and he would sit on the sidelines and watch. I said, ‘What are you doing watching? You’re going to play!’ I couldn’t get through to him at first, but finally about the fifth outing he started playing a little bit. Now he’s running lane two.” – Vi Rumbolo, resident Friendship Village Chesterfield
