“Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified Him, and with Him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.” - John 19:16-18
Today is a day when much of the world will in some way reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus. Both Scripture and history record that Jesus was treated as if He were a criminal and publicly executed in horrific display. Before any of this occurred, Jesus repeatedly told His followers that He would suffer and die. Truth be told, this was the very purpose for which He came. This is the life and death that He chose. Why? He was taking our place. He opted to bear the punishment that our sins and failures deserve and thereby made atonement. We can be forgiven and enter into a restored relationship with God because of what Christ has done. That day, long ago, was filled with heartache and sorrow…but the Lord used it to accomplish an incredible victory. The cross of Jesus shows us not only the horror of our sin, but also the triumph of His love. We are loved by God…fully, and forever.
